If you already know basic grammar, can read Hiragana/Katakana fluently, and have mastered around 1,000 to 2,000 foundational words, the Kaishi 15k is the perfect vehicle to power through the intermediate plateau.

Managing a deck of 15,000 cards requires a sustainable strategy. Without proper settings and habits, you risk hitting the dreaded "Anki burnout." Set a Sustainable Pace

If you encounter a word that feels completely irrelevant to your current goals, or a card that is causing you constant frustration (a "leech"), suspend it. Your time is better spent on words that offer immediate utility.

: Having mastered the most common 1,500 words, the learner begins "sentence mining"—creating their own cards from things they actually enjoy, like manga or video games.

How much can you realistically commit to studying?

Anki is a supplementary tool, not a standalone teacher. Spend twice as much time reading manga, watching anime, or listening to Japanese podcasts as you do flipping through digital flashcards. The deck provides the raw data; immersion provides the context.

Unlike the Core decks, Kaishi shows you the pitch accent for every word using the standard numbering system (0,1,2,3,4,5). If you want to sound like a native speaker later (at the 15k level), fixing your pitch now is essential. Kaishi builds the neural pathways early.

Anki is a supplement to language learning. Do not spend all your time on flashcards; ensure you are also reading manga, watching shows, or listening to Japanese. Kaishi 1.5k vs. Other Methods Kaishi 1.5k Wanikani / Textbooks Primary Goal High-frequency vocab Kanji/General Japanese Speed Fast (2-4 months) Slow (1-2 years) Context Excellent (Sentences) Often isolated Best For Early Immersion Structured Learning

You do not need to memorize all 15,000 words. If you encounter a card that is highly obscure, irrelevant to your interests, or frustratingly difficult, . Your time is better spent on words you actually encounter in the wild. Pair Anki with Active Immersion

What is your or approximate vocabulary size?

: At first, it's a mountain of squiggles. Characters like 日 (day) and 本 (book/origin) are easy, but then come the verbs— 起きる (to wake up) vs. 起こす (to wake someone up).
